The Physician

Dating in my 40’s as a divorcee

I met multiple people for the first time through online dating, some remarkable and others unremarkable but I won’t forget the person that saved my life.  So, this is how the story goes…

I decided to meet the person that I met online but on that actual day, I wasn’t in the mood to go out because it was raining (I know it’s a lame excuse but it’s true).  I texted him and tried to cancel that date three times.  He was persistent so I finally said yes. While sitting across from him eating dinner, he pointed out to me that I have a lump on my neck that needed to be checked.  I was going to ignore his advice but I knew that he would be persistent until I get it checked so I decided to follow his advice.  To underscore the seriousness of his statement, he offered to come to my biopsy and blood work appointments. I was naturally nervous but having a physician hold my hand through the ordeal made the experience less lonely.

As it turns out, the physician diagnosed my thyroid cancer correctly.  Given that he helped save my life and had a smooth demeanor, it’s not surprising that I wanted to get to know him more.  As I got to know him, I realized that he was not likely to be faithful or interested in an inclusive relationship, which is what I was looking for.

The cancer surgery went well, he visited me at the hospital and took me home.  Before I left, I told him that I was very grateful and that will be the last time that he will see me.  I didn’t see a relationship with him in the long run.

Moral of the story:  People come into our life for a reason, sometimes the reason is not what we were expecting
